Glanmire, County Cork, Ireland

Glanmire (Gleann Maghair), Co. Cork is a village about 5 miles, 8Km, from the centre of Cork City.

Glanmire is used by residents of the area to mean the Greater Glanmire area, encompassing Riverstown (Baile Roisín), Brooklodge (Cill Ruadháin) and Sallybrook (Áth na Sailí) areas. These are all four semi-distinct adjacent villages with many facilities shared between them.

Glanmire history goes back to the middle ages.

The River Glashaboy brought industry to the area as a source of power for mills and factories along its banks in the 18th and 19th Centuries. The remains of much of this industry can still be seen today.

Glanmire Churches

There are a number of churches that serve the communities of the Greater Glanmire area.

St Michael’s in Upper Glanmire (b. 1808), St Joseph’s in Spring Hill, near Sallybrook (b.1837) and The Church of St Mary and All Saints in Glanmire (b. 1786)

A Drive Through Glanmire

The main road through Glanmire used to be the main Dublin to Cork road, but with the building of the new dual-carriageway and motorway, Glanmire has been bypassed and is a quiet backwater of a place outside of school-run times.

As you approach Glanmire village from Cork you drive along the estuary of the River Glashaboy. The view of Gleann Maghair as you approach along the river is a stunning one.

You drive past the most luxurious of the Glanmire hotels, the Vienna Woods Hotel on the left. Drive past the Grotto and into the village itself, with Colaiste an Phiarsigh, just one of the Glanmire schools, on your left as you reach the traffic lights.

You can pull in near the Vienna Woods and walk along the river to enjoy its peace and tranquillity, look out for herons or to admire the ancient forest along the river’s banks. This river is famous locally for salmon fishing.

If you are going to the Vienna Woods Hotel, be warned, the turning into the Hotel is too tight to get around in one go. Give yourself plenty of room to make the turn.

If you drive straight ahead at the traffic lights you drive through old Glanmire, past Monkey Maze on your right and on to the next set of lights, you will be at Riverstown Cross. Just ahead is the Riverstown Inn and opposite that the Glanmire Community Centre.

If you make the tricky right turn at the crossroads you will drive over the ancient Riverstown Bridge. This has been adapted to modern use by building a pedestrian bridge alongside it, whilst leaving the original stone bridge intact.

There is parking near Riverstown Bridge. Stop there and walk through the John O’Callaghan Park to the river. Beware rabbits at play, especially early in the mornings. It is a beautiful ten minute stroll and well worthwhile.

Carry on driving away from Riverstown Cross and you drive through old Riverstown (Baile Roisín). There you will notice the Castle Tavern on your right, and, just past that, the Sarsfields Hurling Club. There are three take-away restaurants here.

Sport plays a very big part in the life of Glanmire. Most young people are involved in GAA, soccer or basketball. Sarsfields is a very successful hurling club and has won many County, Munster and National competitions.

Drive Past the Sars Club and take the left fork just before the bend. You pass Riverstown House on your left and Brooklodge National School, now known as Scoil Chill Ruadháin.

Turn left and drive past the school. At the roundabout turn left and you will see GCC, Glanmire Community College. Follow this road to the end. On your left you will see the Hazelwood and Crestfield Shopping Centres. Glanmire Medical Centre is in the Crestfield Shopping Centre. There are six take-away food outlets in these this shopping area.

Carry on past the shopping centres. Turn right at the end of the road and after a few hundred yards you will pass St Joseph’s Church on your left.

On your right you will notice the Glanmire Football Club’s pitches. A Country Market is held every Friday in the large building there.

Half a mile further on, in Sallybrook, is the Brook Inn. Grandons’ car dealers is a bit further on. If you carry on you will join up with the Glanmire Bypass (N8 Dublin road).

If you turn around and drive back along the main road, you will notice an old grey stone building on the right above the road. This is the old school, now used as a base for the Glanmire Area Community Association (GACA)
